KILKENNY´S WITCH
We went to Kilkenny, a beautiful city in the south of Ireland. One day we asked the local people where could we listen to some typical Irish music and get a drink and they recommended us the Kyteler's Inn, a very typical place and it was fantastic!
This pub got the title of Ireland´s pub of the year in 2014.
We discovered that this pub took the name from an ancient witch of Kilkenny, her name was Alice Kyteler, and she was the first recorded person that was condemned for witchcraft in Ireland (13th century). She had four husbands and all of them died in very suspicious circumstances. Reason why she was imprisoned in Kilkenny's castle tower.She eventually escaped and left the country, but her servant, Petronilla de Meath, took her place and was flogged, she was burned to death and her daughter run away with Alice.Oppossite the pub, there was a scary mural of a witch and the local people told us that in the pub some ghosts had been seen at night, It was terrifying!
Alice´s story was the inspiration of a lot of novels such as:
“The Stone”, a novel about Alice Kyteler´s times, which was published in 2008, written by a woman from Kilkenny named Claire Nolan.
Robin Morgan wrote another novel, “The Burning Time” about Alice Kyteler.
“The Kyteler Witch” is a novel that explores the relationship between Petronella de Meath and her employer Lady Alice Kyteler, written by Candace Muncy Poole, 2014.
