TIPS FOR ANSWERING PAPERS 1 AND 2, FOR MAY2015, 2IB HL

Tips for Answering Paper 1 HL READING


§  Read the instructions carefully, if possible underline key words.
§  When asked for “a word”, make sure you only provide one word as the answer
§  Understand clearly what “phrase” means
§  Understand what “paraphrase” means
§  Quote the justification in true/false questions instead of paraphrasing the text.
§  When “quoting”, only the segment which contains the answer
§  Be especially careful in answering questions, which contain a negative
§  Be warned that, in short-answer questions where two, three or more answers are required, you will be awarded only one mark if you include two of the answers on the same line.
§  Practise extending your vocabulary and practise identifying inferences,
§  Be careful to make your handwriting as clear as possible.
§  Take note of what is said in the text, not what seems to be the common sense or what you personally, believe.
§  Read as widely as possible
§  Be thoroughly familiar with the common types of questions and problems you might have.

Tips for Answering Paper 2 HL WRITING


§  Brainstorm
§  Plan and develop your ideas
§  Focus on the task
§  Stick to the limit of words 400 to 450
§  If you write less, your will be penalised by not getting more than 5 marks
§  If you write much more, the examiner may not read all your work therefore not awarding you full marks
§  Paragraph (skip line between paragraphs) and use cohesive devices sensibly.
§  Proof-read your work looking at specific areas


Tips for Answering the WRITTEN RESPONSE HL


§  Be aware of the differences between this task and one required in Paper 2 (i.e. number of words)
§  Base your answers on your understanding of the text and its details
§  Read the text and the task carefully
§  Select (highlight if possible) those items or details from the text that are relevant to the task
§  Write a personal response incorporating these details into your response without just copying from the text
§  The text and the nature of the task will determine the number of details
§  After you finish, check that all the details  relevant to the task have been provided
§  Check how appropriately they have been used
§  Check how appropriate the use of register (tone) and style (formal/informal) is, according to the type of text and the audience
§  Mind your grammar and spelling
§  Remember to paragraph and use cohesive devices where appropriate
